Charity web design 'must accommodate older people'

23rd October 2009

Fundraising websites need to consider older people in their web design, an industry professional has said.

Addressing the International Fundraising Congress, Jonathan Waddingham noted that a significant percentage of online donors are 55 or over and that web design must take them into account.

The JustGiving fundraiser researcher stressed the need for having larger fonts on websites and getting them tested by older people, Third Sector reported.

He added that 33 per cent of the proceeds gathered by the website is from people aged 55 or over and people over 65 provide 11 per cent of its total revenue.

For young adults aged 17 to 24, the figure is just seven per cent.

"Ignore your older donors at your peril," Mr Waddingham told his audience.

Over the ten years since its inception, JustGiving claims to have helped raise more than £450 million for thousands of charities.

It has more than eight million users and 30 per cent of donations made to them would not have been given without the website.
