Fonts for a website need to be chosen carefully, according to writers.
In an article for the Times Standard, Lynn Harvey and Joel Mielke pointed out that if a font is going to be shown on a number of different browsers and platforms, it has to be suited to all of them.
This is one reason why the same fonts often appear over and over again on websites.
However, the writers did report that new technology is being developed which could help web designers make use of a greater number of fonts.
"Image replacement" is one way of improving the appearance of a font, as it changes ordinary test into a picture of any letter style the designer wishes.
This may be done using a Flash movie, but the technology is suitable only for short pieces of text.
As well as looking attractive, website text needs to be good copy.
Recently, an SEO Consult blogger called James explained that search engines seek out well-written text and penalise bad content even if it has keywords in it.
