Businesses must have ecommerce facilities available, according to industry figures.
Writing for Retail Week, Joanna Perry reported that retail professionals she has been meeting recently have agreed that putting money into ecommerce is now a necessity rather than an optional choice.
Ms Perry noted that investment in multi-channel customer options and ecommerce is costly but that various professionals believe that it is necessary for growth and continued profit.
She recalled that at a business breakfast held by Maginus and attended by a number of smaller retailers, getting a profit on technology expenditure had not been marked as an issue.
Meanwhile, managing director of John Lewis Direct Robin Terrell told an Internet Retailing conference that the firm's ecommerce arm had needed £113 million in sales to show a profit but maintained it was still a worthwhile investment.
In addition, Marks and Spencer was said to be looking over its store space as it anticipates more sales from its ecommerce endeavours.
Earlier this month, Marks and Spencer expanded its capacity for online international delivery.
It added 73 more countries to its remit, including South Africa, Japan and Albania.
