Start-ups have been given tips on keeping their websites visible on the internet using search engine optimisation (SEO).
Entrepreneur.com writer Scott Gerber offered the advice in an article that was carried on msnbc.com.
As well as increasing visibility through search engines with SEO, he recommended using social media.
Mr Gerber explained that adding company websites and information to social media profiles would help to get it seen by more people and urged start-up owners to maintain a presence on blogs and discussion forums.
Optimised press releases are another method of creating link-backs to a start-up's website, he said.
According to Mr Gerber, "the key to a successful search engine optimisation campaign is to create a unique language that captures the attention of consumers and becomes synonymous with your brand name".
Patricio Robles of Econsultancy recently used a blog entry to defuse common complaints about SEO.
He said that some people may believe it is complicated while others might be put off by a bad experience with "SEO snake oil".
