A website professional has refuted the idea that search engine optimisation (SEO) is the same as spam.
Writing for Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan said that critics of SEO often equate the strategy with spam but that this is not correct.
"That's like saying email marketing is spam or that all advertising is spam," he argued.
Mr Sullivan stressed that SEO rests on having good and well-written content and criticised automated link spam, which he said is not typical of all SEO.
He also pointed out that SEO includes optimising for video, blog and local searches and highlighted the importance of proper keyword research.
SEO Consult blogger Michael recently stated that keyword stuffing is spam and not SEO.
He said that it "has no place in SEO practice," he wrote, pointing out that such a practice does not consider the reader.
Putting the words into meta tags so search engines identify them but not human visitors is one way of heyword stuffing.
