Users of mobile phones are getting a taste of augmented reality in their mobile phone applications.
Mark Prigg of the London Evening Standard reported that the technology, which brings data about one's surroundings to the mobile device, is already in use.
He gave examples of existing apps which can tell a person where their nearest Tube station is or bring information from Wikipedia about nearby buildings.
The mobile applications work by using global positioning satellites.
Stuff magazine writer Tom Dunmore told the paper: "Augmented reality is without doubt the most exciting technology of the year."
He said that there are many possibilities for its use.
TechRadar recently featured several mobile applications for the iPhone which make use of augmented reality.
It covered ones such as Worksnug, which shows users where they can use their laptops for work and Bionic Eye, which displays nearby coffee shops and restaurants.
According to its report, augmented reality is extremely popular.
