A rising number of adults are joining social networking websites, Ofcom has found.
The communications regulator's research showed that while 22 per cent of adults belonged to such sites in 2007, the figure is now 38 per cent.
Women are more likely to go online for social networking, while men will more probably use the internet to read the news.
A third of internet users download films or television programmes, with those aged 25 to 34 are the demographic who do this the most.
In addition, millions of people are carrying out online banking, bill paying and shopping, but 21 per cent will not type their credit card details into a website.
Ofcom recommends that people use virus protection to defend their computers against malicious software.
It warned that without this, a computer is much more likely to become infected with a virus.
People who think their computer may be infected are advised to carry out a virus check and follow the instructions given by the anti-virus software they are using.
