Online shoppers' mindsets need to be understood for an ecommerce website to succeed.
This is the claim of an article by Raymond Petty on Practical Ecommerce.
He explained that websites need to be tailored to customers' needs and expectation and that many fail because they are not properly adapted for various people.
Mr Petty wrote that some shoppers need more help than others in selecting a product and also observed that returning customers have different expectations to first-time visitors.
He suggested outlining "persuasion paths" for different types of shopper to identify what would convince them to make purchases.
The expert noted that some of these paths will cross over at points but should not be assumed to remain the same after that.
Another Practical Ecommerce writer, Dale Traxler, recently outlined another way of trying to attract different types of people.
He suggested that having the same products sold in several stores could help to reach different markets.
