Help has been offered to firms which want to try developing mobile applications.
Forrester Research analyst Julie Ask told Computer World that too many firms try to create mobile applications for the iPhones without thinking them through properly first.
She warned that such projects need to be "substantially based on data".
Tips given in the publication include bearing the small screens in mind when developing the design for a mobile application and find out which technologies need to be supported by the app.
Customer behaviour and demographics also need to be researched when creating a mobile application.
Another expert, Wescorp chief intelligence officer Christopher Barber, predicted that mobile applications will develop until people can use them to make payments.
Recent research by Nielsen has shown that mobile internet access is becoming more popular.
The number of people using a mobile phone to go online increased by 34 per cent this year, according to the data.
