An increasing number of media organisations are using mobile applications as a moneymaking endeavour, according to a report.
Richard Wray wrote in a Guardian article that groups such as Radio Times and Financial Times have joined the mobile applications sector to try to improve their business.
He reported that free applications are available from news outlets such as the Telegraph and Time magazine and explained that they act as "shop windows" for the online content.
Managing director of FT.com Rob Grimshaw told the newspaper: "We know there are people who are signing up to become FT subscribers purely because of the application."
Reuters and the New York Times also have extra facilities such as saving stories or tracking stocks.
The New York Times has also reported that mobile phone applications have a mainly marketing role.
Carl Howe of the Yankee Group explained to the paper that people who take the trouble to download them are "already half sold".
