A new study has suggested that companies' web design strategies will soon change as more consumers surf the internet from the mobile phones.
The forecast from Forrester Research indicates that over one-third of western European consumers will use the mobile web by 2014, compared with an overall penetration of 13 per cent last year, Reuters reports.
It predicts that the mobile web will follow in the footsteps of the desktop-based internet in terms of popularity as more company websites, search engines, widgets and social media services are redesigned to enable mobile users to better access their content.
"The recession is forcing many consumers to reduce their spending, but they aren't cutting out their mobile subscriptions altogether," remarked Thomas Husson, an analyst at Forrester Research.
Research firm Gartner recently predicted that mobile advertising spending will soar globally as more users snap up smartphones that offer a sophisticated mobile web browsing experience.
