Web developers need to take steps to ensure they offer the best possible mobile ecommerce experience, Google has advised.
Writing on the Google Retail blog, Amy Adams Harding of the Google Retail team noted that the growth of the mobile web could offer significant opportunities for businesses that sell products online.
However, these retailers can only be successful in the mobile space if they properly optimise their mobile store website design, she commented.
Developers should ensure that mobile ecommerce websites are as easy to use as their full desktop sites and that they offer a landing page experience that is uniform across different types of devices, Ms Harding said.
"Login and stored information - such as billing and shipping info - must also be the same over the air as online; the ecommerce experience should be seamless," she stated.
The expert also recommended enabling users to save and send product searches and shopping carts to others via email and text messages.
Last year, a study by Yankee Group indicated that mobile websites do not offer an adequate browsing experience for consumers, with none of the sites examined achieving a score of more than 70 out of 100 when assessed in categories such as design and effectiveness.
