Apple's recent approval of music streaming service Spotify as a mobile application for the iPhone is unlikely to have a negative effect on iTunes sales, it has been suggested.
Last week, Spotify revealed that Apple had finally approved its iPhone app following weeks of speculation over whether it would be accepted due to its potential as a competitor to iTunes.
According to deputy news editor of new media age Will Cooper, Spotify will likely have little effect on Apple's music downloading service because iTunes is very much linked to the iPod, while Spotify is has more of a focus on software only.
"It is not really competing in that sense. The thing about Spotify that people love most is that it has kind of brought back the mixtape. You don't really think of iTunes in the same way," he commented.
Spotify's iPhone app carries certain features that are not available on the desktop version of the client.
For example, users will be able to listen to their playlists even when they are unable to access the internet from their mobile phones, such as when they are on a flight or underground.
