New statistics from mobile application store Handango have shown that BlackBerry is now the most popular platform for which to download smartphone apps.
BlackBerry replaced Windows Mobile in the rankings for the first six months of 2009, representing 44 per cent of all apps sold during this period. Paid app downloads for the Android platform tripled over the first half of the year.
Handango also revealed that the most popular mobile apps overall were SPB Mobile Shell 3, MobiTV, Ringtone Megaplex, Aces Texas Hold'em and the Weather Channel.
Games in particular saw a significant increase in popularity between January and June.
Alex Bloom, chief executive of Handago, said that there is much potential in the paid app sector.
"While theres definitely a place for low price-point apps, I believe there's an even bigger opportunity in the mobile media market for quality apps that are built to augment personal and professional productivity," he remarked.
Mobile app store GetJar recently released figures suggesting that the Opera Mini browser is the most downloaded mobile app across all platforms.
