Web development professionals need to step up their game if they are to counter the increasing threat posed by malware, according to one expert.
The most recent IBM X-Force Trend and Risk Report shows that malware creators are increasingly looking to advanced tactics to infect web users by linking to dangerous software on blogs and social networks and compromising genuine websites.
Speaking to SC Magazine, Craig Lawson, senior security consultant at IBM Internet Security Systems in Sydney, said those in charge of developing websites and applications need to do more to protect users from these threats.
"Web application developers are not doing the necessary pre-release code checks," he commented, adding that "web developers have less excuses for vulnerabilities than anybody else" because applications are easy to fix.
IBM's research found that 3,240 new vulnerabilities were discovered in the first half of the year, with more instances of PDF attacks, phishing and image spam detected over this period.
