New statistics have revealed that online sales rose by 16.8 per cent in the 12 months to July.
According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, UK shoppers spent £4.2 billion on purchases from ecommerce websites last month, up 15.7 per cent compared with June.
The clothing, footwear and accessories sector performed particularly well online in July, as did the electricals segment and the health and beauty category.
Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail at Capgemini UK, said this growth could be attributed to online retailers improving their ecommerce website design to include better product information and images.
Tina Spooner of IMRG added: "It is evident that online merchants are becoming more sophisticated in their marketing efforts and email communications to their customers, the result of which can be seen in higher conversion rates."
About £22.9 billion was spent online in the UK during the first half of 2009, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.
