Consumers with feature phones will find their experience of the web is further enriched thanks to a new software application from Microsoft, the firm has said.
Microsoft OneApp, announced yesterday (August 24th), allows feature phones in emerging markets to access a range of mobile applications, including Windows Live Messenger, Facebook and microblogging site Twitter.
Amit Mital, Microsoft's startup business accelerator and corporate vice-president of the Unlimited Potential Group, said: "Microsoft OneApp will be able to help people do things they couldn't do before with their feature phone - anything from paying their bills to helping diagnose their health issues or just staying connected with friends and family."
The technology is set to launch first in South Africa as part of upcoming consumer mobile service mibli, which will ship with more than 12 new mobile applications later this year. Microsoft's OneApp software development kit will become available by the end of 2009.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal earlier this month, small firms are benefiting from the use of mobile applications, which can be used to encourage better communication between companies and their clients and to advertise goods and services.
