The wisest retailers are investing in improvements to their websites as more shoppers are heading online amid the economic downturn.
According to Google UK managing director Matt Brittin, consumers are looking to the web to find the best deals, encouraged by lower prices and faster broadband speeds.
Speaking to the Telegraph, he noted that the best retailers are those that are adjusting to reflect changing consumer demand "to ensure the shopping experience online is as seamless as on thei high street.
Mr Brittin made his comments following the publication of new figures from research firm TNS, which indicated that 42 per cent of all online clothing purchases are at a reduced price.
Similar research from Google, indicated that the number of searches for "voucher codes" are 115 per cent higher than the same period last year.
Earlier this month, the newspaper reported that Judith McKenna, finance director of supermarket retailer Asda, said the company plans to further grow its online business in the short-term.
Currently, its online grocery store is growing at a rate of around 50 per cent a year.
