Facebook creator and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg said that the social media site has benefited from a surplus of engineering workers amid the recession and is planning to expand its workforce by up to 50 per cent in the next year.
He told Bloomberg that "no-one else has been hiring", which has spelled good news for Facebook, as more professionals are available to take the job on.
Around 900 employees work for Facebook and benefit from a range of at-work "perks", including three free meals every day and the use of a basketball court.
But Reuters noted that the site's success directly contrasts with that of rival MySpace, which announced earlier this summer that it plans to cut two-thirds of its international staff and 30 per cent of its workforce in the US.
Meanwhile Facebook is set to enjoy a 70 per cent increase in revenue in 2009 compared with last year, according to Bloomberg.
There are currently around 250 million users registered on the social media site, which is also used as a marketing tool by a range of companies, including sportswear firm Nike.
