Some 54 million people across the globe will be watching television on their mobile phones by the end of the year, analysts have predicted.
According to the BBC, while take-up of the technology has been slower than expected on smartphones, 20 per cent of people who currently use mobile TV watch it daily and the average user watches it three times a week, new figures from In-Stat and Telegent Systems show.
Most importantly, according to Jonathan Barzilay, senior vice-president of programming and advertising at Flo TV, the results of the poll indicate "tremendous spikes in viewing" for sports and live news, indicating potential growth areas for mobile TV developers and marketers.
"People clearly want to stay connected even if their lifestyle requires them to be at work, or travelling or on the sidelines of a kids soccer game," he said, adding that the memorial service for pop star Michael Jackson and the 2008 presidential election in the US are among the most-watched mobile TV moments to date.
O2 Ireland is among the companies that have recently unveiled a mobile TV offering, including a sports and news package, according to Phones Review.
