Mobile applications are increasingly being used by small firms to keep existing customers.
This is according to the Wall Street Journal, which says that some companies are using smartphone apps to reach a wider audience and advertise their goods and services.
Other apps are being used to enhance customer service and encourage greater dialogue between the company and its clients, while some firms are looking to boost their bottom line by selling paid-for apps that offer a useful service.
"People nowadays want everything to be at their fingertips and if companies are not finding ways to provide these tools [they] will soon see drop-off from their customers," commented small business technology consultant Jennifer Shaheen.
According to a recent forecast from Frost & Sullivan, almost 6.7 billion mobile apps will be downloaded via smartphones by 2014, driven by the launches of new handsets and app stores by manufacturers and mobile operators.
