Twitter shopping cart 'is a bad move for ecommerce websites'

19th August 2009

A new tool allowing ecommerce website customers to use Twitter to complete transactions is likely to be more trouble than it is worth, it has been claimed.

TwoTweet lets businesses deploy a shopping cart that is closely integrated with the microblogging site and enables customers to 'reply to buy'. Only one product can be sold a time using the cart, however.

According to Steven Walling of ReadWriteWeb, using the service "may be the dumbest business decision you ever make" as Twitter is known for its stability and security problems.

"Allowing access to an ecommerce environment with your social network as an identity provider is a supremely bad idea," he commented, adding that consumers generally do not want their online transactions published on the internet for all to see, even if they involve the most innocent of purchases.

Twitter is the fifth most popular social network in the UK, according to figures from web monitoring company Hitwise.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19319357-ADNFCR
