The Wikimedia Foundation has rolled out a new iPhone mobile application for Wikipedia.
Numerous unofficial Wikipedia apps are already available for the iPhone, but this is the first official app for the platform. The app was built by the community and is open source.
The aim of the app is to offer a simple, fast experience and is currently just "a more convenient mobile version of Wikipedia", according to Ben Parr of Mashable.
"With community power, it should gain new features rather quickly," he added, noting that the app currently does not allow users to edit pages, save favourite articles or browse tables of contents.
Frederic Lardinois of ReadWriteWeb said: "The app still needs a lot of polish before it can compete with the 'unofficial' apps."
The mobile version of the Wikipedia website was officially launched earlier this year and offers a simplified take on the online encyclopaedia to make it easier to browse via a mobile phone.
