Spotify plans Android app

28th July 2009

The music-streaming site Spotify has developed an application which would allow it to be run on phones using the Google Android operating system as well as on the iPhone, it has been revealed.

With the company having revealed that the app will be free to download, but only available for use by its premium members, it has been confirmed that the plans have been submitted to Apple for its go-ahead.

While several other music streaming sites have already been given the go-ahead to launch an app on the iPhone, Spotify chief executive has stated that he is still waiting to see whether the computer technology firm deems the streaming service to be too close to its own iTunes application.

He added, however, to paidContent: "We very much look forward to people being able to access their Spotify library wherever they might be and we've spent significant time and resources to ensure we've stuck to Apple's developer guidelines point by point."

At the same time, the BBC has also revealed that the Spotify app for Google Android and the iPhone will allow users to download songs or playlists so that they can play them even when outside of a wireless internet zone.

News of the planned Spotify expansion comes as RIM, the company behind the Blackberry, gears up to unveil its new mass-market version of its popular communications device.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19284041-ADNFCR
