New figures have revealed that usage of Android-powered mobile phones has overtaken that of Windows Mobile devices for the first time.
According to AdMob, Android now accounts for five per cent of the global mobile operating system market, with total ad requests from Android phones soaring by 25 per cent in June compared with May.
AdMob's figures also revealed that Android's US market share stood at nine per cent in June.
Commenting on the statistics, Doug Caverly of WebProNews said: "Given another couple of months at its current growth rate, it seems possible that Android will catch up to the RIM operating system."
Earlier this year, research firm Strategy Analytics predicted that shipments of Android handsets will surge by 900 per cent over the course of 2009 - compared with an estimate of 79 per cent for the iPhone.
It attributed this increase to "healthy" operator, vendor and developer support for the Android operating system.
