Mobile web use 'set to soar in US'

23rd July 2009

Usage of the mobile web will increase significantly over the next four years, it has been predicted.

According to eMarketer, 73.7 million American consumers will access the mobile internet by the end of this year, surging to 134.3 million by 2013.

This will occur as a result of lower costs, easier-to-use handsets and a better user experience for those surfing the mobile web, the research firm said.

One of the main reasons for the current growth of the mobile web sector is the proliferation of sophisticated smartphones capable of running a variety of mobile apps, it noted.

"For many marketers, mobile applications constitute an increasingly necessary avenue for reaching and engaging with their customers, whether by building a proprietary application or sponsoring a third-party effort," remarked Noah Elkin, senior analyst at eMarketer and author of the report.

The Pew Internet & American Life Project recently released figures indicating that one-third of US consumers have accessed the web from a mobile phone in the past.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19278649-ADNFCR
