The latest release of Google Maps for mobile has been launched.
Version 3.2 of the tool makes use of layers to allow users to view many different types of information at the same time.
For example, users could see data on public transport, traffic, local search results, friend locations on Latitude and Wikipedia entries for a particular area.
Jonathan Dixon, mobile software engineer at Google, said in a blog post: "Layers make it easier and more useful to find and interact with geographic content."
The layers can be toggled on or off and users can choose to combine specific layers and remove others.
Google Maps for mobile 3.2 is now available for Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile phones and will be launched for further platforms in due course.
A new Google Maps feature allowing users to see the favourite places of particular celebrities and public figures was launched by the search engine earlier this month.
