Spending on purchases from e-commerce websites rose by 12.3 per cent in June compared with the same month last year, new figures have revealed.
However, online expenditure dropped by 1.3 per cent compared with May, the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index showed.
Overall, some £22.9 billion was spent on online purchases by UK consumers in the first half of 2009.
The sectors that saw the highest year-on-year online growth included health and beauty and the clothing, footwear and accessories industry.
According to IMRG, the figures also indicate that a growing number of consumers are browsing e-commerce websites without making a purchase, with average conversion rates falling from between seven and eight per cent in 2007 to between four and five per cent in the first half of this year.
"Price continues to be a major factor for consumers when shopping online, with recent research suggesting that 90 per cent of UK households are adopting more prudent buying strategies to cope during the recession," commented Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG.
Last month, online fashion retailer ASOS announced a 104 per cent increase in sales for the 12 months to March, with pre-tax profits also surging by 93 per cent.
