Website owners must ensure they offer a specific mobile version of their sites to offer the best user experience possible, it has been urged.
A study by the Nielsen Norman Group found that the success rate for tasks conducted on mobile-specific websites averaged at 64 per cent, compared with 53 per cent for those trying to complete the same activities on desktop sites through their phones.
"If mobile use is important to your internet strategy, it's smart to build a dedicated mobile site," Jakob Nielsen, principal of the Nielsen Norman Group, said in his latest Alertbox column.
The research also discovered that more could be done by website owners to direct mobile web users to their mobile sites.
Mr Nielsen commented: "The best approach is to auto-sense users' devices and auto-forward mobile users to the mobile site."
He added that it can also be a good idea to link to the mobile site from the desktop version of the website.
A recent study by CCS Insight found that male UK consumers are twice as likely to access the mobile web as females and that social network usage is helping to drive overall use of the mobile internet.
