Mozilla has announced the launch of a pilot scheme through which Firefox add-on developers can request voluntary financial donations to help support their work.
The Contributions feature is powered by PayPal and the success of the pilot will be gauged through feedback from the Firefox development community.
Mozilla is also launching new website pages allowing developers to display more information about themselves to help users of the Firefox browser decide whether they want to make a donation or not.
"Our aim with this pilot is to help support a growing ecosystem by providing our users with the opportunity to support their favourite add-on developers," remarked Firefox add-ons director Nick Nguyen.
Version 3.5 of the Firefox browser was launched at the end of the last month, offering new features such as a private browsing mode and technical tweaks designed to speed up its performance.
Firefox currently accounts for more than 30 per cent of the global browser market, according to StatCounter.
