A new report has revealed that US online retailers are increasingly focusing their e-commerce web design efforts on their checkout processes.
The latest State of Retailing Online report from Shop.org and Forrester Research showed that 79 per cent of the 117 retailers surveyed intend to prioritise their checkouts this year, with 88 per cent seeking to offer more information on delivery to customers.
Six in ten respondents said they are looking to improve their homepages, while 50 per cent indicated a desire to add more product images to their websites.
"Retailers realise that, particularly during an economic downturn, shoppers who understand shipping charges at the beginning of the checkout process are less likely to abandon their purchases," commented Sucharita Mulpuru, report author and vice-president and principal analyst at Forrester Research.
A recent study by PayPal suggested that 40 per cent of cases of e-commerce basket abandonment could be prevented by displaying delivery costs upfront before checkout.
