Independent mobile app store GetJar has announced that over 500 million apps have been downloaded by its customers since its launch.
The store has some 50,000 mobile apps available to users in over 200 countries, with its most popular apps including Opera Mini, eBuddy, Nimbuzz, mig33 and Google Maps for Mobile, as well as content built using Adobe Flash.
More than half of the store's users download an app at least once a week, said Patrick Mork, vice-president of marketing for GetJar.
"Our research clearly shows that apps are for consumers of all ages, regardless of where they live, the handset they use or the platform their handset runs on," he remarked.
Over $25 billion (£15.3 billion) in direct and indirect global revenues will be made through mobile app stores by 2014, according to Juniper Research.
This growth will be fuelled by the launch of more app stores targeting a wider range of handsets than at present, the company's April report said.
