Mobile advertising will account for between five and ten per cent of global marketing spending by 2014, it has been predicted.
Scott Howe of Microsoft told Reuters after the Cannes Lions 2009 festival last week that more companies will seek to take advantage of the medium over the next five years.
He highlighted niche or smaller advertisers such as local retailers as being particularly likely to look into mobile marketing, despite being uninterested in more mainstream forms of online advertising.
David Jones of Havas Worldwide and Euro RSCG Worldwide added that mobile marketers need to think of new ways of engaging consumers to see success with the platform.
He said: "If you are interrupted every two minutes by advertising, not many people want that. The industry needs to work out smart and clever ways to engage people on mobiles."
Almost £29 million was spent on mobile campaigns by UK firms last year, the Internet Advertising Bureau revealed earlier this year.
