Online retailers may need to ramp up their website security efforts to attract more sales, new research has indicated.
A poll conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of McAfee found that almost three-quarters of consumers are not changing their online shopping habits in spite of the recession.
However, nearly half of respondents have previously terminated an online transaction due to concerns over security, the study revealed.
Almost two-thirds of consumers said they would be reluctant to buy anything from a website without a clearly visible security policy or trustmark, while about 90 per cent of respondents said they were worried about security on new or unknown sites - such as those belonging to small retailers.
Tim Dowling, vice-president of McAfee's Web Security Group, said: "All websites, regardless of size, need to take measures to prove to customers that their personal information will be safe and secure when doing business online."
The research follows a similar study by PayPal suggesting that almost half of shoppers abandon their online baskets due to security concerns and high delivery charges, among other reasons.
