Usage of mobile web search services is rising globally, according to a new report.
The latest State of the Mobile Web study by Opera reveals that Google is the most popular search engine among users of its Mini mobile browser, although local players in Russia and China outperform the search giant in their respective markets.
Looking at more general usage of the mobile web, the number of page views recorded by Opera for Mini users in the UK soared by 124.3 per cent in the 12 months to May 2009, while the unique user count rose by 49.1 per cent.
The most popular mobile sites among UK users included Facebook, Google, Yahoo! and the BBC.
"Searching the Web via a mobile device presents an enormous opportunity for both search engines and consumers," remarked Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of Opera.
"Almost all search engines are moving forward to offer relevant and timely information based on location."
Research firm comScore released a report earlier this year revealing that younger consumers in Europe tend to access the mobile web more often than their older counterparts.
