Web developers can play a significant part in making the internet run faster, according to Google.
In a blog post, Urs Hoelzle and Bill Coughran of Google explain the ways in which the web could be enhanced to make sites quicker to load and called on web designers to use a "little effort" to optimise pages using tools such as YSlow and Page Speed.
"As a community, we need to invest further in developing a new generation of tools for performance measurement, diagnostics and optimisation that work at the click of a button," they say.
Google also identifies updating HTML and TCP/IP protocols and bringing broadband to more people around the world as some of the other ways in which the web can be sped up.
About 95.1 per cent of all internet connections in the UK could be accounted for by broadband lines as of December 2008, according to the Office for National Statistics.
