E-commerce firms 'relying on discounts to drive sales'

22nd June 2009

Online retailers are increasingly offering discounts to consumers in an attempt to drive custom, it has been suggested.

According to MyVoucherCodes managing director Mark Pearson, the recession is forcing consumers to be savvier with their money by researching products and comparing prices before making a purchase.

As a result, this is increasing traffic to website that offer online discounts and vouchers for a range of retailers, he explained.

"They're still spending, because they still need things, but they research and they use comparison sites and online discounts," Mr Pearson said.

He went on to note that even retailers that are already struggling are attempting to compete with their rivals by offering bigger discounts, making the web something of a buyer's market.

IMRG and Capgemini released figures last week showing that £3.7 billion was spent on purchases from e-commerce sites by UK consumers during May, up by 8.2 per cent compared with the same month last year.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19229862-ADNFCR
