Small e-commerce firms express confidence during recession

18th June 2009

Most small and medium-sized online retailers in the UK feel confident for the next three months, a new poll has revealed.

According to eBay's latest Online Business Index, nearly 70 per cent of these e-commerce retailers say they are confident in the prospects for their operations over the next quarter.

About 57 per cent expect to see higher sales during the period and some firms are attempting to avoid making redundancies during the recession by changing their stock, cutting office costs and reducing advertising spending.

Over 75 per cent of firms said they had reached their online sales target in the previous quarter while 69 per cent are planning to expand in the next 12 months.

Mark Lewis, managing director of eBay UK, said: "Online businesses continue to demonstrate that it is possible to succeed in a recession."

UK e-commerce sales will see double-digit growth this year to approach the £21 billion mark, according to a recent forecast from Verdict Research.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19225873-ADNFCR
