Big brands to dominate e-commerce, poll says

17th June 2009

A new survey has suggested that most online retailers believe big brands will continue to dominate the e-commerce sector over the next five years.

Undertaken by Practical eCommerce, the poll found that 68.7 per cent of respondents believe that smaller online retailers will become more specialist in their operations while larger brands will account for the bulk of online sales.

It also discovered that 43.3 per cent of online retail firms believe Amazon.com could become the most prominent web-based marketplace in five years' time.

Other findings included the fact that most respondents think online video will be the dominant technology in the e-commerce sector over the next few years, with Ajax, automated chat and Flex following behind.

UK e-commerce sales rose by 14 per cent in the 12 months to April, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

Overall, British shoppers have spent a collective £200 billion online since 2000, according to the index.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19223620-ADNFCR
