Social media is now a crucial tool for businesses looking to retain and attract online customers, according to one expert.
Lisa Wehr of Practical eCommerce said that social media marketing is now more than a "buzzword" and advised online retailers to ensure they play an active part on social networking sites as soon as possible.
This will not only help to bolster search engine optimisation efforts, she said, adding that "it also provides a valuable outlet for articulating special offers, capturing the attention of brand advocates and becoming part of the conversation surrounding your brand".
Armando Roggio of Practical eCommerce said earlier this year that retail social media campaigns can include adding a frequently updated blog to an online store that relates to the products on sale.
This could both deepen customer engagement and encourage word-of-mouth marketing should a consumer link to a blog post on a social media site, he noted.
