The key to developing a successful mobile application is ensuring that it fits well with the platform in question.
This is according to Eric Litman, chief executive of mobile analytics firm Medialets, who told eMarketer that developers should consider the example of the iPhone.
He said that it is a good idea to consider the features that iPhone users are likely to want and to look at the specifications that make the handset unique, such as its user experience, tilting and shaking capabilities and touch-screen.
"Elements like that are key ingredients for success," Mr Litman remarked, going to add that developers must market their apps just as they would with a normal product to ensure consumers are aware of the app rather than relying on "natural discovery".
Global revenues from mobile apps are likely to reach $25 billion (£15.3 billion) by 2014, according to a recent forecast from Juniper Research.
