Online retailers may wish to incorporate Twitter into their e-commerce strategy, according to a marketing executive.
Mike Volpe, vice-president of marketing at HubSpot, told Armando Roggio of Practical Ecommerce that the microblogging site could be a "powerful" tool for e-tailers looking to develop a sense of community on the web.
He suggested that e-commerce providers using Twitter as part of their marketing strategy should aim to post approximately 20 'tweets' - updates of 140 characters or less - on the site each day.
Including detailed biography information and ensuring posts have a friendly and conversational tone will also attract more attention, he said.
Online retailers can use Twitter to promote sales, offer discounts or post images of satisfied customers using their new products, Mr Volpe suggested, although he added it may not be wise to mix and match these tactics.
He stressed that the key to developing a good social media campaign is to first gain a comprehensive understanding of the target audience.
The Reputation Institute's Anthony Johndrow recently told Internet Retailer that consumers are looking for a personal touch from companies during the recession.
