SEO campaigns 'need research'

10th June 2009

Research is an essential part of developing a successful search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign, according to a writer.

Garrett Pierson, author of What Success Takes, wrote on Search Engine Journal that one of the most common mistakes web marketers make is not putting enough research and effort into finding the right keywords and phrases for their business.

He said it is "vital" to take the time to do this from the outset, as otherwise the SEO campaign will feature phrases "that not a single soul searches".

Mr Pierson explained that he uses Google Keyword Tool on a regular basis to determine which words are best and opts for long-tail phrases whenever possible.

He said this is a wise option because longer key phrases are less competitive, but "get great traffic" and will make it easier for a site to improve its standing in the search rankings.

Keyword density is also something to consider, he added, as web marketers have a tendency to under or over use these phrases. Mr Pierson explained the optimal balance to strike is between 20 per cent and 30 per cent.

Writing for Examiner.com, dating and relationship blogger Kristin Marquet recently pointed out that people can check their site's keyword density using a number of online tools.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19212181-ADNFCR
