The success of Apple's iPhone and its App Store has helped to encourage more companies to look into acquiring developers of successful mobile apps, it has been reported.
According to the New York Times, a growing number of businesses are buying out app developers rather than investing in the creation and building of their own mobile apps to capitalise on the soaring popularity of such software.
It cites the case of IAC, which owns a range of web properties and recently announced the acquisition of UrbanSpoon.
UrbanSpoon makes a highly popular app by the same name that recommends local restaurants and has been downloaded almost five million times to date.
"The iPhone is a big part of our mobile strategy. It takes a lot to invest in developing an application. It was much more appealing to pick one up," said Leslie Cafferty, spokeswoman for IAC.
Apple is expected to announce the launch of a new version of the iPhone at the Worldwide Developers Conference today (June 8th), although there has been no confirmation as yet on the new features the handset will have.
