Google has unveiled a new location-based app offering a directory of local businesses to Android users.
The Places Directory app is now available from Android Market as a Google Labs product and lets users look for nearby businesses in a variety of categories, such as cinemas, hotels, restaurants and banks.
Listings include the distance of each business from the user's current location, as well as directions, ratings and photos.
Local businesses' locations can also be viewed on Google Maps and the app is currently available in US English and Chinese.
Aries Hsieh, software engineer at Google, said that the app came about initially as a 20 per cent project because he wanted to be able to access a directory of local businesses when travelling from Taipei to Google's headquarters in Silicon Valley.
A recent report from Ovum predicted that sales of Android mobile phones will reach 72 million units by 2014, accounting for almost one-fifth of the total smartphone market and rising above Windows Mobile.
