Location-based mobile apps are seeing strong growth in take-up among consumers, new research has found.
Undertaken by Compete, the study revealed that one in three smartphone owners use a location-based app at least once a month.
One-fifth of these respondents said they would like to use such apps if they had more information about the types of products on offer and how to use them.
Overall, weather and navigation apps were found to be the most popular types of location-based apps.
The research also found that consumers are interested in receiving local alerts and special offers from local retailers and other businesses.
"This presents an opportunity for advertisers to reap the rewards by serving up compelling and relevant ads that will likely see higher click-through rates and subsequent engagement," commented Andy deGaravilla of Compete.
Last month, technology website ReadWriteWeb conducted a Twitter poll of readers' favourite location-based mobile apps, with Brightkite and Google Maps and Earth coming out on top.
