UK e-commerce sector still growing, says report

2nd June 2009

The UK e-commerce industry will continue to grow this year and in the longer term despite the recession, it has been predicted.

Verdict Research said that UK consumers will spend £20.9 billion on internet purchases in 2009, up 13.3 per cent compared with last year.

Furthermore, this figure is likely to rise to £31.2 billion by 2013 as more consumers seek to take advantage of the internet's low prices and convenience, the research company said.

The forecast comes shortly after the latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index figures revealed that UK e-commerce spending has soared by 5,000 per cent over the last nine years.

Despite the growth, retailers still face challenges in attracting consumers to their e-commerce sites as the web is not immune to the down economy, said Malcolm Pinkerton, senior retail analyst at Verdict Research.

"Success will depend on a company's ability to create retail theatre and a consistent shopping experience across all channels, with highly differentiated, targeted, propositions heightening the consumer experience," he added.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19198615-ADNFCR
