Acer to launch Android netbook, phone this year

2nd June 2009

Acer has announced that it is to launch a new netbook and smartphone running on the Android operating system later this year.

The company said at the Computex trade show in Taipei that it expects to launch the netbook - new version of the Aspire One - in the third quarter of 2009 and will eventually release more netbooks offering Android as an alternative to Windows.

Acer announced earlier this year that it intends to launch a series of Android-powered mobile phones and confirmed in Taipei that its first such smartphone will be released in the final quarter of 2009.

The company also said yesterday (June 1st) that it had joined the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium spearheaded by Google to supervise development work on the Android operating system.

Jim Wong of Acer said: "The Android operating system offers incredibly fast wireless connection to the internet; for this reason, Acer has decided to develop Android netbooks for added convenience to our customers."

Android currently has almost 0.08 per cent of the mobile sector based on the percentage of users browsing the mobile web with Android-powered devices in May, according to Net Applications.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19198626-ADNFCR
