Google has announced that developers can now take advantage of Java language support within its App Engine.
The functionality was made available to a small number of developers earlier this year and has been opened up to all as of this week.
Announcing the news at the Google I/O developer conference this week, the search engine also unveiled Google Web Elements, a tool that lets website owners incorporate Google products such as YouTube and Maps into their web pages.
In addition, it announced the second stage of its Android Developer Challenge, where developers come up with an app for the Android platform that is then judged by users of Android-enabled phones.
Vic Gundotra, vice-president of developer products at Google, called on I/O attendees to "bet on the web", stating that it has seen a dramatic increase in innovation in the last year that has helped to support the rise of a "sophisticated" open web platform.
Google App Engine was first launched in April last year.
