The company behind the Ubuntu operating system has unveiled a new execution environment that may enable Android apps to run on the platform.
Canonical told the Register at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Barcelona that the environment works by tricking apps into thinking they are running on a phone rather than an Ubuntu-powered PC through the use of a number of patches.
A source at Canonical, which is the chief sponsor of Ubuntu, said: "People have thought of Android or Ubuntu on netbooks - we are convinced the way forward will be Android applications on Ubuntu netbooks."
The unnamed source added that desktop Linux has already solved a number of complex issues that Android has not yet addressed.
Meanwhile, the latest release of Android - version 1.5 or the "Cupcake" update - recently started to be rolled out for users of the T-Mobile G1 in the UK and the US.
Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition was launched last month, along with Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition and Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix.
